Colitis Specialist

Do you experience chronic abdominal pain, bloating, and cramping? There is a chance you may have colitis, an inflammatory disease that targets the lining of the large intestine. Colitis can be debilitating, often being paired with less direct symptoms like fatigue, chills, weight loss, and dehydration. Colitis can make even routine activities extremely difficult and even unbearable. At Healthonomic Primary Care, our staff has the knowledge and tools to deliver an accurate diagnosis and help you determine the steps to recovery. Make an appointment with us today to begin your journey to better health.

What is colitis?

Colitis is a condition in which the lining of your large intestine (your colon) and your rectum are both inflamed. Inflammatory bowel disease includes colitis and Crohn’s. Dr. Lentzou can diagnose all of that.

How is colitis diagnosed?

Certain symptoms prompt testing. We may use a battery of tests including blood work, stool tests, endoscopy, and MRI or CT, while ruling out Crohn’s, IBS, and liver disease.

How is colitis treated?

Treatment may include prescription medication and dietary changes, and surgery for severe cases. Following directions helps avoid hospitalization. Surgery may include removal of the large intestine.

Are there any ways to prevent colitis?

Colitis's cause is unknown, so there's no known way to prevent it. Risk factors include a family history of IBS, Ashkenazi Jewish descent, and ages 15–30 or over 60. If you're having troubling symptoms in the bathroom, call or go online and see Dr. Lentzou as soon as possible.
