9 Tips for a Healthy Morning Routine

Adhering to a healthy living routine is key to looking and feeling better. Truth be told, your morning routine can very well set the tone for the rest of your day. If your morning starts off wrong, chances are your entire day will follow a similar trajectory. But if you can discipline yourself to follow a healthy morning routine, you can set a positive start and keep it up throughout the day!

Simple activities such as stretching your muscles or being mindful when getting ready for work can make a world of a difference. Whatever your goals are, a productive and healthy morning routine can help you reach them.

1) Give Yourself Enough Time for Self-Care

Your body is a temple and it deserves some self-love! In order to check off all of your self-care tasks, try setting your alarm 10 to 15 minutes before the time you normally get up. This can help you make more time to wash up, brush your teeth, wash your face, and take care of all your personal hygiene needs!

2) Make Your Bed

While making your bed seems like an insignificant change, it can definitely affect the comfort you establish in your home. Studies have shown that making your bed first thing in the morning can lead to more productivity and organization throughout the day. Not only that but who doesn’t love coming home to a freshly made bed after a long day of work?

3) Allow Natural Light Into Your Room

If you have a hard time waking yourself up in the morning, allowing the sunshine into your room can help you. Our circadian rhythms are highly dependent on the sun, so exposing yourself to natural light is essential to feeling wide awake. Like this, you’ll feel refreshed and ready to take on the day.

4) Drink Water Before Anything Else

Before consuming anything else you normally do in the morning (coffee, tea, juice), drink water. This is important to do when you wake up so that you hydrate your body first thing. Drinking water as soon as you wake up is also shown to support your metabolism, helping you break down meals and burn calories throughout the day.

5) Stretch or Exercise

Exercise is always a good way to stay active and it benefits your cardiovascular health. Getting some exercise done in the morning can help you get your blood flowing. If you feel slow and sluggish during the day, it’s time to get your body moving in the morning. Not a morning workout person? Not a problem! You can also get your blood flowing by doing a few simple stretches!

6) Eat a Fulfilling Breakfast

As the old adage goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast leads to feelings of irritability and will only make you feel hungrier throughout the day. It’s difficult to stay focused and get work done when all you can think about is taking your next break.

Some of the healthiest foods you can eat in the morning include:

  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Chia seeds
  • Berries
  • Whole wheat toast
  • Avocado toast

7) Go Over Your To-Do List

It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you have a long day ahead of you. Before heading off to work, look over your schedule so you are aware of the tasks and projects you have to complete. This also applies to house duties. If you have pending, timely tasks, move them to the top of your list to remind yourself to complete these errands.

8) Set Realistic Expectations for Your Day

Ideally, it feels good to be able to check off every task you had set for the day. Sometimes, that doesn’t always happen, but you don’t have to beat yourself up for it. In order to keep yourself from letting yourself down, make sure to realistically plan out your day. Consider how much time you have and then determine which tasks you can get done and what will have to be finished later on in the week.

9) Be Mindful of Your Breathing Before Going Out

You can’t achieve healthy living routines without putting your mental health first. It is important to take a breath every now and then. Be present in the moment and catch your breath. To keep anxiety and stress at bay, take a couple of deep breaths, be aware of your surroundings, and pay attention to how your body feels. A little mindfulness and meditation can really go a long way in healthy living!
